課程概述

Course Description
We live in a world where mood disorders beset both individuals and society as a whole. How do language, affects and knowledge relate to each other? How is the binding of memory related to the bonding between the subject and her objects – or other subjects? Is wisdom – which we so urgently need – something still relevant and attainable? This course attempts to explore these questions by digging into three sources of wisdom: Jacques Lacan’s late teaching, Alice Munro’s late fiction, and the impossible writings of Zasetsky, a patient of severe left cerebral hemisphere damage.

 Course Objectives
This course attempts to
1. introduce late Lacan’s teaching,
2. explain how Lacan’s late theory, Munro’s late fiction and Zasetsky’s writings can be seen to support and explicate each other,
3. provoke the students to ponder over the conundrums which beset our world, namely, the problems concerning affectivity and knowledge.

1. Class participation and bi-weekly written responses (40%)
2. A term paper, and its working outline (60%)
